Big Sean Wants To Make A Message With Follow-Up To "Dark Sky Paradise"

Big Sean has been going HAM in the studio to prepare the follow-up to last year's Dark Sky Paradise.

Speaking with XXL for the publication's Spring 2016 cover story, Big Sean explained that after the success of Dark Sky Paradise, he has found a new sense of purpose in crafting his next album.

"When I first started making my album, I was just making music off feeling, not thinking about it,” he says. “Then I started thinking, ‘What the fuck do I want to say? What do I want to do now?' I came up with something that struck a chord with me.”

Big Sean says he has been continuing to work with Jhene Aiko, whom he teamed up with for the Twenty88 R&B album. He describes their chemistry as natural and ranks her alongside G.O.O.D. Music label boss and his mentor, Kanye West.

"It feels like I’m making music with one of my friends,” he says of collaborating with the singer. “It’s on the same level as just how making music with Kanye. It feels comfortable with her in the studio.”

The Detroit rapper says that another relationship he has learned to embrace in the process of making this album is that with his parents.

“One of the things I talk about on the album is being a better son,” he says. “I would talk to my mom and she’d say, ‘I haven’t talked to you in weeks.’ I realized you gotta embrace your business and your work but you can’t let it take over you.”
