Schoolboy Q Talks Kanye West, Drugs, Not Voting & Blank Face LP

The countdown is on for ScHoolboy Q, who’s getting ready to drop Blank Face LP on July 8.

After performing a medley from the album on “The Late Show,” Groovy Q stopped by New York radio station Hot 97 to talk about his upcoming album and the Kanye West collaboration“THat Part.”

During the Q&A, Q also spoke openly about voting, drugs, and why he almost quit rapping before making Blank Face.

Watch the interview and see highlights from the convo below.

ON HIS KANYE WEST COLLAB: “Literally, I got Top Dawg on the phone. I’m like, ‘I low-key would like to get Kanye on this song. What you think?’ Top kinda lives by Kanye and I guess they be talking or something.”

ON HEARING KANYE’S VERSE: “I was like, ‘Aw, he served me. He gave me the woo-woo.’ When I first heard it…My heart just kept breaking with every ‘OK.’ And then I’m like, ‘Oh, I get it.’ I played it again and I’m like, ‘That’s why he’s Kanye West.’ And when I perform it at the shows, that’s the best part. I have to perform Kanye West’s verse just because of the OKs.”

ON BLANK FACE LP: “Everything can’t be serious. I got a whole album of seriousness. You gotta have fun. Even my seriousness, I’m not trying to hear it for a whole album…[This album] is real gangster.”

ON FATHERHOOD: “I almost quit for this album…Just period. AfterOxymoron, I almost quit [rapping]. I was gone for a year-and-a-half. Before that, I was gone for a year. Before that, I was gone for six months. That’s three years. My daughter is seven. The first two years, I didn’t raise her because I was dead broke. I only got two years of raising her out of seven years. I’m not about to be that rapper and I’m not about to be that person that puts his job and his business, his money, over his family.”

ON DRUGS: “Drugs is weak, man. I just smoke weed.”

ON WHETHER HE’LL VOTE: “Fuck no. For what? That’s y’all job. Y’all care about it. I don’t care about it…I don’t have an opinion on it. I’m worried about my daughter and me being her president. I gotta take care of her.”
